  • Common Problems of Traumatic Brain Injury

Each year in the United States more than 1.6 million people suffer traumatic brain injuries.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by an external force, such as car accidents, sports injuries and physical abuse. An overwhelming inability to cope with everyday life begins almost immediately following a traumatic brain injury.

A traumatic brain injury may happen to anyone at any time and it is indiscriminate.

Even a minor impact to the head can disrupt brain activity. Initial reactions by a person to a traumatic brain injury is to be dazed and confused. Many times total recovery is possible. Individuals who continue to suffer the consequences of a traumatic brain injury may need special care to help them with rehabilitation.

Traumatic brain injuries may cause extreme changes in personality, behavior and physical activity in a person. These can include irritability, anxiety, depression, loss of memory, loss of coordination and other psychological and physical problems.

The strategies to overcome these problems must be learned, however, a large number individuals suffering traumatic brain injuries may never be able to function in the outside world.

Some traumatic brain injuries require bone and tissue grafts for the patient. This opens up another possibility of problems as the trade of cadavers is not regulated by any federal or private agency. Annie Cheney has written an exposé on the industry of body harvesting. As gruesome as it sounds, this business provides a lot of opportunity for medical advancements, but there are some risks associated with receiving cadaveric material.

The problems with traumatic brain injuries can persist throughout a person's life. However, if the individual receives timely and correct treatment, they may be able to develop skills to help them compensate.
