    Traumatic Brain injury can be caused by any bump or blow to the head. Prevention of these injuries involve common sense.

    Prevention methods for motor vehicles include:

    • Always wearing a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle.
    • Always buckling a child into an approved child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt while in the vehicle.
    • Never driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

    Prevention methods for children including having them wear a helmet when:

    • Riding a bicycle, motorcycle, snowmobile, or all-terrain vehicle;
    • Playing any contact sport, such as football, ice hockey or boxing;
    • Wearing in-line skates or riding a skateboard;
    • Batting or running the bases in baseball or softball;
    • Horseback riding;
    • Skiing or snowboarding.

    Prevention methods in the home:

    • Use a step stool with a grab bar to reach objects on high shelves;
    • Install handrails on stairways;
    • Install window guards to keep young children from falling out of open windows;
    • Use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs when young children are around;
    • Remove tripping hazards such as small area rugs and loose electrical cords;
    • Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower floors;
    • Put grab bars next to the toilet and in the tub or shower;
    • Maintain a regular exercise program to improve strength, balance, and coordination;
    • Have regular vision checkups

    Prevention of playground injuries is possible if the area around the equipment is made of shock-absorbing material, such as hardwood, mulch, and sand.

    Prevention of firearms injuries can is possibleif they are stored unloaded in a locked cabinet or safe. Bullets should be kept in a separate secured location.
