The city was renamed in 1822 for the first territorial governor of Florida and the future 7th U.S. President, Andrew Jackson. Jacksonville is sometimes abbreviated as Jax, which comes from the abbreviation on luggage tags attached to baggage entering Jacksonville International Airport.
