    Brain damage is defined as the destruction or degeneration of brain cells.

    Causes of brain damage span a wide range of conditions, illnesses or injuries. Possible causes of widespread, or diffuse, brain damage include prolonged lack of oxygen (hypoxia), poisoning, infections and neurological illnesses. Common causes of focal or localized brain damage include physical trauma to the head, stroke, aneurysm or neurological illness.

    The extent and effect of brain damage can be assessed by through a neurological examination, brain imaging and neuropsychological assessment.

    Brain damage does not always result in long-term impairment or disability. However, the location and extent of damage has a major effect on the outcome. The result of serious brain damage can be permanent disability, such as neurocognitive deficits, speech or movement problems and mental handicap. Severe brain damage may result in persistent vegetative state, coma or death.

    Different professions can be utilized in the care and rehabilitation of someone who suffering brain damage. Neurologists, neurosurgeons and physiatrists are doctors specializing in brain damage treatment. Neuropsychologists specialize in understanding the effects of brain damage and may be utilized to assess the extent of brain damage or in creating rehabilitation programs. Occupational therapists may brought in to direct rehabilitation programs to help restore lost function or help re-learn essential skills.

    Since the brain continues to develop until the late teen years, a person sustaining damage in childhood often recovers more successfully than someone suffering brain damage as an adult.
